The Mystery of the Crystal Cave

An Epistemological D&D Oneshot

The Mystery of the Crystal Cave

August 2023

During my masters programme I had a course called "Science and Humanities". The course explored the so-called "cultural differences" between various academic fields, comparing their methods, relationships to society, and approaches to truth and knowledge, ultimately concluding that the divide between them is kind of arbitrary.

The final project for the course had an open format, so naturally I leaned into my passion for tabletop games and created a Dungeons & Dragons oneshot. The goal: let players grapple themes of epistemology while rolling dice and slaying imaginary monsters.

Game Summary

The Mystery of the Crystal Cave is a Dungeons & Dragons oneshot that's as much an epistemology lesson as it is an epic adventure. The story begins with the players waking up in a dark cavern, stripped of their belongings and with only hazy memories of how they got there. They are greeted by a child and introduced to Kaldor the Seer, who insists that the cave is the only reality that exists.

Armed with nothing but their wits, the players must find empirical evidence to convince Kaldor, and the cave's inhabitants, that an outside world exists. This search for truth mirrors classic philosophical ideas, such as Plato's allegory of the Cave and broader questions about the nature of reality. As the players collect proof and challenge kaldor's beliefs, the cave's reality itself begins to unravel, leading to a final, unsettling revelation.

The result is an adventure that immerses players in the process of knowledge-gathering and critical thinking. Who knew epistemology could be this fun?
